Nearly half of all 2023 Toyota GR Supras sold in the United States have been optioned with manual transmissions, a Toyota spokesperson confirmed to Road & Track.

A total of 1216 GR Supras sold since the manual transmission was launched for the 2023 model year have come with three pedals, representing 47 percent of Supras sold in that time.

The GR Supra, launched in 2019, wasn't originally supposed to get a stick-shift option, but enthusiast demand convinced Toyota to develop a manual transmission for the car.

The transmission is a six-speed unit that uses the casing from the BMW 3-Series but gearing from the M3, engineers told Road & Track in an exclusive interview. The linkage and shifter itself are new, as is the Toyota-developed i-MT rev-matching software. The center console has been adjusted to make room for the shifter, while the final gear ratio in the differential has been raised from 3.15 to 3.46.

The manual Supra's popularity shouldn't come as a surprise. Enthusiasts have been wishing for a stick shift option since the car was new, and now they're cashing in. It helps that the stick-shift Supra is far more fun to drive with three pedals, offering a wonderful balance between speed and satisfaction the eight-speed auto version just can't match.
