For a few dark years in the late 2000s, the small truck looked like an endangered species as models like the Ford Ranger disappeared from the market. Not only has that trend reversed in recent years, a handful of major new entries in the segment have made the world of compact and mid-sized trucks more competitive than it had been in years. If you need the utility of a truck, but do not need a full-sized vehicle, these are your best options.

Price: $32,565

The next-generation of Ford Ranger is here, a little later than a new Ranger arrived everywhere else. The new truck sits right in the middle of an expanded Ford truck lineup, below the full-sized F-150 and above the very different and much smaller Maverick.

You can get it as a Raptor, too.

Price: $23,400

The Maverick is a very different sort of truck than the Ranger or F-150, mostly because it is not really a truck at all. The Maverick is more like a crossover with a bed, making it the perfect truck for someone who needs a little more utility than the average car but does not necessarily need the brute force of a traditional truck.

Half a decade after it was first shown as a concept, Hyundai's crossover-like mini-truck finally arrived in 2021. Although the name may suggest it is related to the Santa Fe, the Santa Cruz is actually more like the smaller Tucson with an added bed.

Is it a truck? Is it a crossover?

More than a decade before Hyundai put a bed on its Tucson, Honda pioneered the crossover-truck with the Ridgeline. The second-generation Ridgeline is a little larger, sharing its bones with the Pilot and Passport.
